I READ about young drivers being priced out of owning a car due to the high cost of insurance in ‘Drive’ (The Press, May 27).
I watched a similar report recently on TV, where one young man said he had been given a quote of £90,000 and the lowest quote he received was still around £9,000. You could own a small one-year-old car and still have change left for that price.
Most youngsters do start off with an old-ish car which, if it were to be involved in an accident, depending on the severity, would probably be written off at a cost of only the book-price of the car, which in turn would net the insurance company a huge profit.
By all means charge new young drivers a bit more than those who have been driving for years, but there is no need to charge stupid prices and prevent them from even owning a car and getting on the road after paying out monstrous driving lesson charges.
Before long there, will be a company who sees the market in this and undercuts everyone on price, in order to insure youngsters at reasonable cost. It’s just a matter of time.
