A TAXI driver from York who wants to thank St Leonard’s Hospice for the care his late wife received there has inspired his colleagues to hold a day of fundraising.
Gordon Bakal, 59, a driver for Castle Taxis in Kitchener Street, lost his wife Carol to stomach cancer almost a year ago, only five weeks after she was diagnosed with the disease.
He said: “St Leonard’s was absolutely brilliant. They made her so welcome and as soon as she came in they asked her if she wanted a glass of wine.
“St Leonard’s was like a second lifeline to Carol. She thought it was a great place, and we can’t speak highly enough about the care she was given. The care of all the patients is fantastic.”
Carol, 54, was well known to many at Castle Taxis and Gordon said his colleagues were only too pleased to offer some of their earnings to the cause.
All the drivers will donate half their takings to the hospice in Tadcaster Road and there will be a collection box in each of the cabs.
The operators have also agreed to donate their pay for the day in June while Castle Taxis owner, Derek Thornton, said he would donate a pound for every journey made on the day.
Gordon said: “Everybody knows someone who has been in the hospice and that’s why they wanted to help.”
Janet Morley, director of fundraising at St Leonard’s Hospice, said: “We are really grateful to Gordon and his colleagues for their generosity in organising this special day.
“It’s a lovely way to remember Carol and to raise funds for the work of St Leonard’s.
“And for anyone who can’t join our Midnight Walk on June 18, here’s another way you can help, by taking a trip with Castle Taxis.”
