A JEWELLERY student has told how she was chosen to make the crown awarded to the winner of this year’s Miss York contest.

York School of Jewellery was given the commission to produce the crown, which was presented to Anastasia Smith, 20, of Norton, Malton.

Justine Hodgson, of Riccall, who has been a regular jewellery school student for the past three years and mainly produces items for herself and her family, was selected by school tutors Naomi Holman, Nik Stanbury and Julie Moss to design and make the crown. As a Freeman of the City of York - a title which has been in her family for several hundred years – Justine was seen as the ideal candidate to produce the crown.

Justine, who can normally be found working as centre manager at the Regen Centre in Riccall, learned new skills during the design and manufacture of the crown, which is made from sterling silver with a Yorkshire Rose design, and is finished in a combination of gold leaf, black patination, yellow citrines and moonstones.
