A SUPERMARKET worker from Selby is preparing to travel to India for an epic cycling challenge.

Emma Cook, 29, who works at Morrisons in the town, has signed up to take part in a 350km (217 mile) cycling challenge from Agra to Jaipur next year.

Emma, of West Park, near Leeds Road, said she was already training for the challenge.

She said: “I started cycling back in April, and it was the first time I’d been on a bike in 15 years.

“That was pretty interesting, but I’m up to about eight miles at a time now. I’ll also go for a two-mile run before a late shift too.”

The challenge starts on October 27 next year and Emma and a group of fundraisers, including former model and television presenter Melinda Messenger, are expected to cycle between 40km and 92km per day for five days.

Emma said she signed up to the event after watching this year’s Comic Relief charity special on television.

“I must have signed up to something on the internet a long time ago, because I keep getting information about this kind of thing, but I thought I was too unfit to do them.

“But I watched Comic Relief and thought I should do something for charity because it had been a while. The next day, a leaflet arrived with the details of Action For Charity’s Women V Cancer event.”

The cycling challenge has been set up to raise money for three women’s cancer charities, Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, and Ovarian Cancer Action, with each member of the cycling team expected to raise £2,800.

Emma said: “I know a couple of people who have survived breast cancer, neighbours friends, workmates and family, and it all makes you think.

“I’m excited to do it, but it’s a lot of work to put in.”
