PYJAMAS and nighties were the order of the day when a swimming club for disabled people in York staged a fancy-dress fundraiser.
At 93, Violet Matthews is the oldest member of New Earswick Disabled Swimming Club, having swum for the city of York in the River Ouse in her youth, and joined about 25 other members to enjoy the festivities.
Dennis Woodcock, club vice president, said: “The event was to keep our funds at a level where we can hire the pool. The lifeguards volunteer but we pay for their exams and training. We couldn’t function without them.”
He hailed it a success, estimating that several hundred pounds had been raised, and said the club was “going strong”.
The fun-loving club is a registered charity supported by volunteers and has an electric hoist to help people into the water.
It meets at 10.30am to 11.30am on Wednesdays and Fridays. New members are welcome.
