OF our region’s local authority areas, Harrogate is regarded as the most affluent, placed 283rd in the list, 39 places above York.

Selby, in 236th place, finds itself in a similar position to York. Hambleton is ranked 265th, Ryedale 200th and East Yorkshire 216th. All 354 council areas across England have been assessed, and the lower the ranking, the more deprived a local authority area is deemed to be.

Of all the local authorities in North Yorkshire, Scarborough is classed as being the most deprived, at 83rd in the list.

The scores are compiled by combining those from seven areas – income, employment, health and disability, education, skills and training, barriers to accessing housing services, crime, and the general living environment.

The study marks the London areas of Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets as the most deprived in England, followed by the Manchester and Liverpool districts.

The Hampshire district of Hart is classed as the most affluent in the country, followed by Wokingham, Surrey Heath, South Northamptonshire and Elmbridge, in Surrey.
