TO PARAPHRASE Shakespeare: “Twas ever thus, and thus ‘twill ever be, that politicians make fools of thee and me.”

Is Health Secretary Andrew Lansley for real? Ideological Tory mantra has placed him in a straitjacket of babbling nonsense.

Mr Lansley claims the NHS is out of control, with a funding gap of £20 billion with annual costs possibly rising to £230 billion by 2034. Of course it will rise with inflation over the next 23 years. However, of more concern are the fiscal constraints on the NHS by the Tories.

Tory fondness for neo-liberalism is taking from the poor and making the stinking rich even stinkier. That is the real reason for Mr Lansley’s NHS concerns.

As with the deficit machinations, it all depends which parameters are used to define the NHS. Scarier the better as far as the Tories are concerned.

The real scare stories are reports of abuse in private-sector care homes with the biggest private care company bankrupt, underlining the distrust in private equity involvement in the care system.

We need to expand the NHS and employ more carers for adequate professional care.

As matron might say regarding the Tories intentions: “Nurse! The screens!”
