YORK lost out twice in this year’s Google Street View Awards for Britain’s best-loved streets.
Last year, Shambles topped the poll as Britain’s most picturesque street.
But although both Low and High Petergate were shortlisted for Britain’s shopping street, as was Skipton High Street, none made it into the top five. Nor did the picturesque New Road in Robin Hood’s Bay, and Montpellier Hill, in Harrogate, both nominated in the Britain’s most romantic street category of the awards.
Dawn Doyle, the manager of LK Bennett in Low Petergate, said: “I think what’s let us down is that there are still a lot of empty shops.
“But the street is definitely on the up – we have some fantastic brands down the street and some lovely independent stores. We can compete with the best.”
Bondgate Within in Alnwick was crowned Britain’s best shopping street, and Copse Hill Road in Lower Slaughter, Gloucestershire, was named Britain’s most romantic street.
