COUNCIL chiefs in Selby have pledged to assist elderly and vulnerable people despite budget cuts.
At the first meeting of its executive since local elections, it was decided Selby District Council would direct grants to offer emergency support for repairs and maintenance to the homes of elderly and vulnerable residents, who make up about one third of the population of the district.
Coun Gillian Ivey, executive member, said: “Many homeowners, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, may need support to keep their homes in good repair.
“We will encourage and support owners to make use of all the available funding sources to meet these costs and will direct the limited public funds available towards those in our communities who need it the most.”
The council has also developed a new accreditation scheme for landlords, and a new North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service Safety standard to help protect residents of rented homes.
