MY THANKS to The Press for highlighting the success of the Latvian Festival in York (The Press, June 9).
Very grateful thanks are also due to the Rotary Club of York Ainsty, which generously sponsored the series of concerts.
Latvian Opera soloist Evita Zalite thrilled our audiences and at times moved them to tears with rendering of Latvian lieder, while one of Latvian’s finest organists, Kristine Ademaite, displayed her virtuosity in the classical repertoire.
We hope to see them here again. The quality of Latvian musicians is second to none – they deserve wider recognition.
More than £3,000 was raised to support the Day Centre for the Elderly at St Saviour’s Anglican Church in Riga. Renewed thanks to York Ainsty Rotary and all who came to support the concerts.
Issy Sanderson, Organiser, Latvian Festival in York.
• IT WAS good to read about “The Baltic Exchange” in The Press, but there were omissions in the article. My chief concern is that the main organisers and sponsors, the Rotary Club of York Ainsty, did not receive any acknowledgement.
Rotarians and Inner Wheel members worked extremely hard to ensure that the festival was a success. It should also be noted that the proceeds from the festival are for a day care centre for the elderly in Riga.
This is just one of the many international projects Rotary is involved with and the Rotary Club would like to record thanks to all who supported the concerts and Tithe Barn event.
Jim Murison, Council member, York Ainsty Rotary Club, Sutor Close, Copmanthorpe, York.
