NEARLY 300 primary school children have had a taste of the 1940s at the Yorkshire Air Museum, near York.

To help them understand more about wartime Britain, children aged seven to 11, from schools across York and North Yorkshire have taken part in Flightpath, an action-packed day at the Elvington museum.

The highlight was a fly- past from a Spitfire.

Themed workshops included singing war time songs, dressing up in the style of the time and going on parade.

Wendy Taylor, of event organiser North Yorkshire Business and Education, said: β€œIt is very valuable for children to enjoy a day of learning outside of the classroom and the activities provided within the safe, but stimulating atmosphere of the Yorkshire Air Museum create an enjoyable learning experience.”

Local schools taking part in the day included Terrington CE Primary School, Sand Hutton Primary School, Elvington Primary School, Fishergate Primary School, Heworth CE Primary School and Osbaldwick Primary School.

She said the event would not have been such a success without the support of event sponsors Sheppee International, Pocklington Accountancy Ltd, the Donald and Patricia Shepherd Charitable Trust and Rolawn Ltd.
