THE controversy about the Clifton Green junction continues, but there is a solution which would involve neither further disruption nor the high cost of reverting to the original system.

I travel from Boroughbridge Road to Clifton several times a week during the working day, and it is not unusual to meet a tailback reaching from the Clifton lights to the Ouse bridge and, sometimes, even as far back as Salisbury Road.

Then, when I eventually get to Clifton, I notice comparatively little traffic on the A19 either leaving or approaching the city. A simple answer would be, during off-peak times, to lengthen the time that Water End traffic gets the green light. This would increase traffic flow, and dissuade impatient drivers from using the Westminster Road and The Avenue “rat run”.

During rush hour the normal sequence of traffic signal timing would be resumed.

Reverting to the original system, would not improve matters. Without the cycle lane, the two lanes were frequently blocked by wide vehicles anyway.
