LIFE on the road and jet-lagged sleepless nights in hotel rooms are the inspiration for Moby’s tenth studio album.
Ironically, Moby’s music for insomniacs could well send you straight off, such is the electro-wooziness of the 15 tracks. Ever the artist (the CD is accompanied by a book of photography), Moby has conceived the album as a whole; it’s designed to be listened to in its flow. Which means you’ll probably wake up come track five when the lovely vocal of Inyang Bassey comes in waves over the swirling strings of Rockets.
Moby does Bowie on the next track, The Day, and returns to Play territory on Lie Down In Darkness with its gospel singing supplied by Joy Malcolm. There’s some Eno inspiration evident on track nine, After – enough to almost tempt you on to the dance-floor. Then it’s back to bed as Moby returns to his sonic sleepscape.
Indulgent or essential? Afraid I’m leaning towards the former.
