THEY’RE always good value, Gomez – and this seventh studio album finds them in resurgent mood.
The old-before-their-time blues of the early days have evolved into something markedly their own: a sometimes delirious blurring of rock, Nashville country and straight-ahead pop.
And how confident they sound, starting with Options, an upbeat introduction which marries wry lyrics with surging melodies; I’ve Got The Feeling follows in similar mood (with a touch of those old blues, allied to soulful horns), while the title track, boasting deep dipping vocals from Ben Ottewell, is a stirring anthem, with big chorus and soaring strings.
Just As Lost As You begins with a twitch of acoustic guitar and builds into another sky-touching chorus, while The Place And The People carries off a similar trick. Ottewell, whose own solo album was such a treat earlier this year, stirs the emotions with Our Goodbye, a lovely, love-shot hymn to heading into the sunset. Song In My Heart, meanwhile, shows that Gomez have learned a trick or two from TV On The Radio, whose Stuart Bogie guests here.
