AN estate worker has become the latest nominee for The Press’s Community Pride Awards.

John Nicholson, from City of York Council’s housing operations group, is the estate worker for the Navigation Road and Walmgate area of York, and has been nominated in the Public Sector Hero category.

John was nominated by his colleague Gary Garland, who said John was always willing to go the extra mile.

Gary said: “John works tirelessly to keep the estate clean and tidy and the planted areas in good order. Customers and the local Residents’ Association frequently comment on how good the estate looks as a result of John’s hard work. He’s always willing to do that little extra if he can to help, like watering while customers are away.”

John was also nominated for Person of The Year in 2009’s awards, and his achievements were also recognised recently in a hand-written letter from Kersten England, who wrote to him after receiving a letter of praise from a York resident.

This is the eighth annual Community Pride Awards, which is run by The Press in partnership with the council and local businesses, and was set up to recognise the hard work of local people.

All nominees must live or be based in the City of York Council tax area, and the winners will be invited to a special awards ceremony in October.
