RAINY conditions failed to dampen the spirits of racegoers who still donned their most stylish clothes to brave yesterday’s weather.
About 10,000 visitors of all ages sheltered under hats, umbrellas and programmes to watch the event.
The races were even graced by a mysterious group of women who doubled as celebrities including Posh Spice, Angelina Jolie, Cheryl Cole, Rihanna and Beyonce.
Speaking yesterday James Brennan, marketing manager at York Racecourse, said: “I think the people who kept the faith have been rewarded by an enjoyable day. It has been a relaxed day to kick off the weekend. It’s a great tribute to the support of the racegoers.” Four of yesterday’s races were won by the Easterby family from North Yorkshire. trainer Mick Easterby and his nephew, Tim, had winning horses as well as Hambleton trainer Kevin Ryan.
Today is York Racecourse’s annual Macmillan Charity Raceday, which was last year attended by more than 27,500 racegoers.
This year sees the return of the Silent Auction in order to raise additional funds for the charity.
Gates open this year at 11.15am with the first race at 2.10pm.
