TEEN green prospect Sam Wilkinson was integral to a stunning county conquest of country, writes Tony Kelly.

The 13-year-old Fulford Golf Club star was part of the Yorkshire Boys team which routed Wales in an invitational challenge match at Fixby GC in Huddersfield.

The white rose county aces blossomed to post a 12½-5½ triumph over a Welsh side, which recently triumphed in a three-way international tournament over Scotland and Holland.

The Yorkshire team’s coaches – Steve Robinson, the head pro at Sandburn Hall GC and Graham Walker, head pro at The Oaks GC, near Aughton, were delighted by the success.

Said Robinson: “For a county side to beat a national team and by such a margin is quite a solid achievement. Sam is looking to be a very decent player.”

The Huntington School pupil recently topped the qualifying stage for the Fulford GC club championship when his gross 75 off the blue tees, the longest on the course, equalled the standard scratch score.

There was yet more county success for the Robinson/Walker coaching axis when Yorkshire gained a clean sweep in the Northern Schools’ championships at Whickham GC.

The boys and girls’ teams took the team titles while Jamie Bower of Methley GC, who is coached by Robinson and Walker, won the individual boys’ crown, a feat matched by Alison Knowles, also of Yorkshire, in the girls’ championship.
