IN THE article headlined “Cuts Campaigners move into square” (The Press, June 10), you appear to misunderstand the intent of the protest camp which has been in Library Square since Thursday evening.
Though many of us are unhappy with the cuts the Government is imposing, the foremost intention of our camp is to invigorate and open up our democracy.
We reject the idea that citizens’ only input into the vital decisions that affect us all is to vote every four or five years. We are challenging managerial top-down politics and the undue influence of corporate lobbies, not least the financial lobby, in government.
We aim to bring the debate out into the city, and do what our political system won’t: which is to have a real debate, open to everyone.
