CAMPAIGNERS fighting plans to move a children’s heart surgery unit from Yorkshire collected about 1,000 signatures in York on Saturday, with another 1,000 expected to be returned shortly.
Ann-Marie Sheard, whose three-year-old son Isaac has a heart condition requiring him to use the service at Leeds General Infirmary, said another 400 people had signed postcards to send to Prime Minister David Cameron to protest at the move.
Parents whose children use the services are hoping to collect more than 600,000 signatures, which they will deliver to Downing Street on Tuesday.
The campaign group will also be packing bags at Morrisons in Foss Island Road, York, next weekend.
Supporters can also visit chsf.org.uk to register in an online petition.
Ann-Marie said: “We want everybody to be aware that this service could possibly close. It covers such a wide area of Yorkshire and so many children are going to have to travel for open heart surgery to Newcastle, Liverpool or London. Some children just aren’t going to make it.”
