A PLAQUE has been unveiled at a new outdoor equipment store in York, marking the decision to name mountaineer Gary Osguthorpe as York Adventurer of the Year.
The Press has reported previously how Gary, 49, from Strensall, had won an adventurer competition organised by the newspaper and the new GO Outdoors store in Foss Bank.
Readers were asked to send in pictures of themselves enjoying an outdoor adventure and explain why they thought they should win the title, and there were a number of high-quality entrants, young and old, who between them had gone kayaking, skydiving, snowboarding, sailing and husky-sledging, not to mention walking on glaciers, searching for tigers and hiking through rainforests. Gary told how he had climbed – and cycled – across Europe and America, from the Alps and Spain to Utah and Nevada.
As well as the plaque, Gary received £250 of vouchers to spend at the store.
He said he planned to buy equipment to use in a climb of the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps next month.
