MORE than 200 schoolchildren in a York village took part in a national world record attempt to raise awareness of road safety.
Pupils from Wilberfoss Primary School marched from their school gates as part of an initiative by road safety campaign Brake, to beat the world record for the largest “walking bus”, which involved tens of thousands of students across the country.
Sue Monkman, head teacher at the school, said the event was a success, but pupils would have to wait to find out whether they had helped to break the record.
She said: “It was very good. All 206 children took part, with parents and helpers. It was quite an event, but we’ll probably have to wait until next month to find out if the record was broken.
“We have junior road safety officers in the school, and one of their jobs has been to explain to the children what was going on and why it was important.”
Brake had hoped more than 125,000 children from almost 600 schools around the country would take part in the Giant Walking Bus, enough to break the current record of 119,697, and to raise more than £35,000 for the road safety charity.
