ON a recent visit to Aalst, Belgium, we met a woman who went on a school exchange visit to York in 1977.

She remained in contact for a while with the family with whom she stayed. Over the years, the contact was lost. She has tried to re-establish contact, but without success. I wonder if any reader has knowledge of this family.

The Belgian woman is Gighiolo De Vos, and the York family are named Kay. The school friend was Fiona and her brother was Simon; the father, David, worked for Rowntree Macintosh; the mother’s name was a little unusual, so I will use that for identification purposes.

The family lived in, or near, Tadcaster Road, as was the school Fiona attended.

David went to Canada for the firm, but it is not known if all the family went with him. It was at this time that Gighiolo lost contact.

Incidentally, Gighiolo enjoyed her stay in York so much, she returned some years later for her honeymoon.
