York City Rowing Club members stroked to success in the recent National Masters Rowing Championship.
The competition, held at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham, was the subject of heavy rain throughout the day, but that did not put a dampener on the performance of York’s Masters ‘B’ team, who won gold in the eights.
The team, including Charlie Heise, Dave Heffernan, Greg Pipe, Patrick Evans, Phil Press, Dan Clarke, Chris Jones and Ian Hazel-Grant, coxed by Steph Hazel-Grant, beat Monmouth Rowing Club to take first place.
The York Novice Masters ‘C’ squad also won the gold.
Their team included Chris Jones, Hugh Dawick, John Brooks and Mike Porte.
The squad had only spent two weeks together, yet gelled very quickly as a unit. Their organised display defeated their counterparts from Walton on Thames.
The club’s attention now switches focus back to home waters this weekend, with the York Summer Regatta being held on the River Ouse on Sunday, starting at 9am.
The draws can be found on the website www.ycrc.co.uk
Meanwhile, York’s top women’s crews are on the road, travelling to Henley Women’s Regatta.
