MR HOLLAND has done much for music in this country, what with his long-running stint hosting Later on BBC2 and the enthusiastic captaincy of his Rhythm And Blues Orchestra.
His enjoyable albums are, in a sense, compilations – so a ‘best-of’ collection might seem a bit beside the point. Fans will have almost everything here already, apart from a demo of Odd Man Out and a live version of Maybe I Need Her.
For those who don’t, there is plenty to cherish: the moving Message To My Son from Solomon Burke and Eric Clapton; the outrageous ham of 200lbs Of Heavenly Joy with a positively volcanic Tom Jones; I Think It’s Going To Rain Today with David Gray; and instrumental joyousness that is Honeydipper; and that’s just a taster.
• Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra play Ripley Castle on July 16, Harrogate International Centre on November 12 and York Barbican on December 20.
