IF New York duo Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin’s debut album teaches us anything, it’s that some acts can pull off retro better than others – luckily, Cults have done their homework.
With Spektor-alike album opener Abducted, and glockenspiel-heavy lead single Go Outside, Cults kicks off as it means to go on, with a shameless nostalgia for the sixties and the talent to back it up.
While Follin’s vocals occasionally get lost in the mix, the music and tunes are enjoyable enough for that not to matter, and by the time she rattles off a playful threat in the chorus of Oh My God, you’ll be eager to apologise for whatever made her want to leave.
A couple of mid-album tracks can drag, particularly Never Heal Myself, but by the Belle & Sebastian-esque Bumper and The Polyphonic Spree-ish closer Rave On, you’ll be straight back to track one to listen again.
