WORKERS in a York building avoided injury when the demolition of a neighbouring building smashed the window of a meeting room.

The incident occurred at the site of the new planned hotel in Toft Green, behind the new council headquarters, when fencing used to protect Hudson House was struck by falling material, and fell into and smashed the window.

A worker from Hudson House, who did not wish to be named, said he had heard the crash from halfway across the building.

It is not known how many people were in the meeting room when the incident occurred which took place at about 11.30am, but a site spokesman said nobody had been hurt.

A spokesman for Hudson House said: “There was a Network Rail meeting taking place, someone saw the material coming towards the window, and warned everyone in the room, and they all got out of the way before it broke.

“We will be completing an incident report and hopefully meeting with Millers’ site manager later this afternoon.”

A spokeswoman for Miller Construction, said an investigation would be held into the cause of the incident, and the window would be replaced today.

Demolition work had restarted on the site by 12.40pm.
