NORTH Duffield Primary School are through to the East Yorkshire Area Final of Drax Cup 2011, the biggest cricket competition for under-9s in the country.
The team beat Brotherton and Byram Community Primary School in a thrilling final match, scoring off the last ball to win by two runs, 253 to 251.
A play-off for third was won by Cliffe Primary School who defeated South Milford Community Primary School by 248 runs to 237.
The five schools playing in the event, held at Selby Cricket Club, also included Drax Primary.
The East Yorkshire final at Hull CC will see North Duffield face Snaith Primary, Goole, as well as Spring Cottage, Swanland and Victoria Dock, all from Hull, and Martongate, in Bridlington.
Four teams, one from each Yorkshire region, will play the finals at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Sunday, July 3, prior to the Friends Life t20 Yorkshire v Nottinghamshire tie.
The competition is sponsored by Drax Power Limited as part of its Cricket in the Community scheme which provides cricket coaching to schools and organised by Yorkshire County Cricket Club in conjunction with Yorkshire Cricket Board and Yorkshire Schools’ Cricket Association.
Andrew Gale, Yorkshire captain, and Yorkshire and England star, and current England and Wales Cricket Board Women’s Cricketer of the Year, Katherine Brunt, are ambassadors for the Drax Cup 2011.
