IN your Leader column under the heading “Murray’s Moment” (June 14) you ask us, the paying public, to be cautious, and not to weigh him down with too much expectation at the upcoming Wimbledon fortnight.
Come on now Mr Editor!
Andy Murray has already amassed a £14 million fortune and has just signed a contract to endorse one company’s gear for the next five years for £10 million, so we are not talking “give the poor lad a chance here”.
He is currently number four in the world, he has beaten the three above him several times, and grass is his favourite surface.
So yes, we do have expectations for a British win, and if he does he will be the pride of Britain, worth every penny and we’ll hail him as one of our own.
And, of course, if he loses he will become once again, for another year, that underachieving, overpaid, surly Scot!
