A MOTORCYCLIST has been banned from the highways after being caught by police riding at 117mph on a notoriously dangerous road near Sherburn-in-Elmet.
Andrew Baker, 33, of Willow Rise, Thorpe Willoughby, was spotted speeding along the B1222 by traffic police on a routine patrol.
Police figures have revealed that in recent years there have been six people killed, 12 serious incidents and around 15 injuries on the B1222 from the A1 near Sherburn-in-Elmet to Stillingfleet.
The road is particularly dangerous due to a series of blind and tight bends, adverse cambers and a concealed bridge.
Police used a mobile speed gun to determine that Baker was riding a Yamaha RI motorcycle at almost 120mph.
Baker pleaded guilty to speeding at Northallerton Magistrates’ Court and was banned for 60 days and fined £570.
Inspector Michael Barron, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “I hope this result shows that our officers are experiencing continued success in developing and using more innovative techniques to improve the safety of the roads across the county.
“We encourage motorcyclists who use the county’s roads to visit northyorkshire.police.uk, where they can download the Biker’s Guide To North Yorkshire, which gives collision information as well as advice and guidance.”
Other roads identified by the police as being dangerous for bikers include the B1257 from Stokesley to Helmsley, the A59 from Harrogate to Skipton, and the A171 from Whitby to Scarborough.
