Out of 17 matches played by Poppleton Tennis Club’s three teams in the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League this season, only two have been lost.

Poppleton 1sts now boast maximum points from five matches in division one after a comfortable win on David Lloyd’s indoor carpet. The Poppleton second ranks are now five points clear at the head of division two after 30 games at home by John Anderson and John Burdett did half the job for them against Appleton Roebuck.

And while in division six, David Lloyd 2 gained revenge, winning 56-52 on Poppleton 3s’ outdoor carpet, with 28 match-winning games from Paul Chappell and Alastair Heath for the visitors, the Poppleton ranks are still on course for a top two spot.

Fulford have stuttered in their chase for the division one title.

Govind Baker and Sean Evans should have handed them another home win, but a tremendous, 11-1 final rubber from Dunnington stalwarts Trevor Loten and Dave Walton, snatched the match, 57-51 for the visitors who went joint second.

Joining them are York, with a solid home performance to see off Pocklington 69-39.

The return of Fran Milivojevic, meant Bubwith could effectively field two first pairs in their home fixture to Wigginton. Mark Harris and Milivojevic scored 23, while captain Jon Longthorp and Paul Blackett hit 22, to record Bubwith’s first win of the season and take them off the bottom.

There’s no stopping Stamford Bridge in division three, as they steamrolled fancied Sutton-on-Derwent 72-36, with 26 from Tim and James Hunt, as third pair.

Runaway division five leaders, Bishopthorpe suffered an unlikely 52-56 home reverse to strugglers Heworth, after Oliver Hicks and Nick Latcham mugged Bish’s star duo 11-1 in their mid-match rubber. In division six, Cliffe join the promotion chase after Ian Crowther and captain Bruce Parker hit 30 in an 81-27 walloping of Wilberfoss 2.
