What a lovely surprise to chance upon the public vegetable bed when walking home down Peasholme Green.
I had read about the scheme, but confess to having been somewhat sceptical that such a public-spirited and generous venture could survive the twin threats of greed and vandalism. But survive it had, for there was a beautiful display of flowers, fruit and vegetables, lovingly tended and ready for picking.
After gathering modest handfuls of Swiss chard and a couple of beetroots (oh, and testing the strawberries), I was on my way, faith in human nature restored.
At a time when ‘grow-your-own’ is the new buzzword yet land for allotments is at a premium, the selflessness of these community gardeners is to be applauded. Well done Edible York!
