I rarely agree with David Cameron, but in the case of foreign aid I agree with him and not David Quarrie (Letters 18th June).
The “Arab spring” has brought the first chance of democracy for many states in the Middle East and Northern Africa.
For too long, the UK and other Western governments have supported dictatorships in this area for the sake of “stability” and oil interests. We have even gone as far as arming some of these oppressive regimes. It is time that we put our money where our mouths are and actually support democracy.
Not only is it the moral thing to do, but in the long-term it will create real stability in the area and make it harder for the likes of al Qaida to recruit the disaffected who have to live under these tyrannical regimes.
