THESE are the scenes at one of York’s most historic buildings, as the massive project to convert it continues.
West Offices in Station Rise, the site of York’s first railway station, are being turned into new multi-million-pound headquarters for City of York Council.
James Alexander, the authority’s new leader, was taken on a tour of the site earlier this week and took these pictures showing the progress so far.
Coun Alexander said: “The rich history of the building makes the council’s occupancy humbling. I saw where Stephenson and Hudson held their board meetings and saw where residents will be welcomed into the council building to meet the council.
“I saw the archaeological dig taking place and I was pleased to learn the dig will be open to residents and visitors in the near future.”
In fact, the dig is open to the public from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and 11am to 3pm on Sunday. So far, archaeologists have uncovered the foundations of a 3rd Century Roman bathhouse on the site.
The entrance to the public viewing area will be in Station Road, under the Bar Walls.
