I suspect that Peter Chapman (Lost bus link, June 15) is being unduly optimistic in his reference to getting support from parish councils to retain supported bus services.
We have been trying in Rawcliffe for many months now, but only very recently getting a glimmer of interest.
We are also affected by loss of Hodgsons 29A evening and Sunday service Easingwold-York, and were astonished to learn that Easingwold Town Council supported the North Yorkshire County Council drastic cuts to such services countywide. How’s that for a kick in the teeth from public representatives? On the positive side, Outer York MP Julian Sturdy responded to North Yorkshire’s consultation by regretting the plans for wholesale rationalisation of rural bus services.
Those who live in outer York parishes should be aware of what the cuts, being considered by City of York Council, will mean for their local access to city and countryside.
A handful of services are to be totally withdrawn.
We need a united stance currently, and there may be a possibility that those now in control will look at other options to retain/reinstate affected services if York and North Yorkshire were to co-operate and look into sharing any subsidy.
In the meantime, where services exist – and some are quite good – every effort must be made to support them, bearing in mind that in many cases local public transport is being adversely affected by Park&Ride.
