YORK’S king of clubs Simon Dyson will be at full throttle in the drive to make The Open.

Dyson is in the field for the BMW International Open in Munich tomorrow when he hopes to hang on to his current placing in the Race to Dubai money-winning list that should secure him a coveted berth in the 140th Open Championships at Royal St George’s in Sandwich next month.

Said Dyson: “I’m in a good position, but I will still be aiming for as high as possible a finish in Munich.

“I’m determined to qualify for The Open – that’s the big aim now.”

Dyson goes into the tournament, which carries a total prize fund of more than £1,750,000, in his best form of the year and in the middle of some of his most startling play in his 11-year professional career.

He has posted three top ten finishes in his last six tournaments.

At the tail-end of last month in his last BMW event – the PGA championship at Wentworth – he was a scintillating third bested only by the current world’s top two players, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood.

“I’ve been playing some of my best golf in years,” added the 33-year-old Malton & Norton Golf Club star.

“My driving has been excellent and tee to green I’ve not been playing better.

“My putting is good, especially when you consider I was keeping up with Luke and Lee last time out.

“So all that’s missing from a win is a little bit of luck that everyone needs.”

Now ranked at 72 in the world, he has dropped a couple of places since his inaction last week, Dyson would have to miss the cut in conjunction with his nearest Dubai challengers carding a top five place at the Golfclub Munchen Eichenreid course to miss out on The Open.

Dyson has targeted the 140th championships at Royal St George’s among five consecutive Europe-based tournaments, starting with Munich tomorrow, as key to advancing further in the world rankings and potentially adding to his current crop of four European titles.
