A NORTH Yorkshire farmer is featured in a new booklet promoting British pork.
Richard Lister, a pig farmer from Boroughbridge, tells his story in the booklet, which also includes favourite pork recipes by celebrity chefs Raymond Blanc, Phil Vickery, Brian Turner, Jamie Oliver and Aldo Zilli.
The booklet, called Choose It And Use It highlights the versatility of pork, bacon, ham and sausages and calls on shoppers to help pig farmers by buying products that carry quality labels, such as Red Tractor pork.
Richard, who has been a farmer for 43 years in the business started by his father in 1957, suffered major losses due to high feed prices between 2007 and 2008, but now he said the situation is even worse, with spiralling global wheat prices causing most pig farmers to lose about £10 per pig.
“Although things improved for a while the problem has returned and the situation is even worse now,” he said.
“So we are incredibly grateful to all the chefs who have backed our campaign by contributing their recipes and calling on shoppers to look for quality marks such as the Red Tractor on pack,” he said.
