A WEEKEND of fun is planned as part of a traditional village festival in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Plans for the annual Barmby Moor Feast have been announced.

The festival can be traced back to the medieval times when a passerby documented that he had stopped off in the area and a fair was being held.

This year the feast weekend will be held from July 14 to 17.

Bronya Emmison, a festival organiser, said: “People should come along because it will be a fun day out that does not cost very much. It’s very well known in the area. People walk from Pocklington. It’s been going on for a long while.”

On Thursday, July 14, the weekend begins with a drummer going around the village at 5.30pm to announce the beginning of the feast.

At 6pm North’s Fair opens on the village green as it has for 30 years. On Friday, the fair will be open on the green from tea time to 7pm and there will be a “Victorian handicap fun race” from the playing field to the Boot And Slipper pub, as was the tradition at the beginning of the 20th century. This will be followed by a pie and pea supper at the pub. Saturday, July 16, will be carnival day and will begin with a bicycle trail around the village. Tea and coffee will be served in the village church.

At 1.30pm a procession will leave the village hall, walking through the village to the playing field.

At 2pm, guest of honour Gail Daley, the new vicar, will crown the new queen, Zoe Anderson. Celebrations will continue through the afternoon with attractions including face painting, dancing displays and kite flying.

Adult tickets cost £1.50 and admission for children under 16 is free.
