A couple from York are celebrating their diamond wedding today.
Margaret and George Moses, of Fulford, married at Lincoln registry office after George was demobbed from the RAF.
George, 81, said: “We’re both from York originally, and I met Margaret in the Burnes public house, which is now the Hansom Cab.
“I was there with a friend who was on leave from the army, and we both met our future partners that night.”
The couple lived briefly in Waddington, where George was stationed, then moved back to York after they married, and stayed with their parents before moving into their own home.
George worked in various jobs, including committee member for a working men’s club, and as storekeeper for the military museum in York between 1978 and 1994, where he oversaw the museum’s move to its current site next to Clifford’s Tower, while Margaret worked for City of York Council as home help for elderly and vulnerable residents.
The couple raised a son, Stuart, and now have a granddaughter, Emma, and great-grandson Zak, who live in Harrogate, and said they would be spending their anniversary at home, enjoying each other’s company.
When asked what the secret to a long and happy marriage was, George said: “I would say it’s sharing everything.
“We are all the same, and we all have our ups and downs.
“Anyone who says to me that they never argue are either liars or don’t talk to each other.
“You mustn’t let the little things bother you, and don’t go to sleep on an argument.”
