Yet again more emotional letters supporting the Leeds Heart Unit (June 21). But they seem to have forgotten about the reasons for the reduction in the number of units carrying out operations.

Remember Bristol? Remember Oxford? The Department of Health should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this situation to go on for so long.

If I had a child who needed surgery I would want this to be carried out at the best available facility, wherever it was based.

The experts have suggested that there should only be four or five units in England. I would prefer that the experts decide solely on clinical excellence where these units should be.

The last people who should be involved are politicians, local pressure groups and the media.
