More than 100 schools in Yorkshire could be classed as failing under new Government targets which will demand half of secondary school pupils must attain five good GCSE passes by 2015.
The benchmark for all schools is currently 35 per cent, but will increase to 40 per cent next year, and 50 per cent by 2015.
This year’s league tables, based on last summer’s GCSE results, show more than 130 state secondary schools across the region showed a 50 per cent pass rate, but the remainder would only be classed as failing if improvement was not shown.
No secondary schools in York or East Yorkshire fell below the 35 per cent pass rate this year, but nine schools in East Yorkshire did not achieve 50 per cent.
