YORK and North Yorkshire schools won gold, silver and bronze at an educational Olympic event.

A team of four from Fulford School came first out of 33 schools from across Yorkshire and as far afield as Bury, Newcastle and Nottingham in the Physics Olympics competition, held at St Peter’s School in York.

Bramcote School in Scarborough came second and York’s Manor CE School came third.

The games, which included exploring the stability of towers constructed from spaghetti and jelly babies, aimed to promote physics to students.

David Morris, head of physics at St Peter’s, set up the event, now in its fifth year, with funding and sponsorship from the Institute of Physics, the Ogden Trust, The Rotary Club of York Vikings, and Taylor’s of Harrogate, as well as Nestlé.

“Every year I take a group of sixth-form pupils to a Physics Olympics in Liverpool and thought it would be a good idea to do this sort of thing for younger pupils,” he said.
