The first Sunday open of the new coarse fishing season drew a healthy field of 72 to waters on the Ouse upstream of York.

But disappointingly, the vast majority were travelling rods from outside the York area.

It was one of these that took the crown on a tricky day with bright sunshine and a low clear river.

Peter Hyde, from Leeds, led the way from a peg above the Rough Field at Redhouse.

Working the middle of the river with a caster feeder and worm, he netted three bream, plus roach and perch for a 13-13-0 winning net.

Four pegs above the winner, Kev Ellerby did his bit for local pride taking second with 10-1-0.

The Acomb Tackle rod also used the caster feeder to good effect bagging a brace of bream plus skimmers. Andy Bradley took third with another bream-based haul of 8-4-0 from Redhouse Above.

Others: Martin Thorpe 7-4-0; Andy Jackson 6-4-0; Stuart Aldridge 6-0-0; Jimmy Rawcliffe 5-11-0; Keith Hobson 5-10-0.

Carpvale Doubles has been in great form the past week as the fish look to recover lost energy from their recent spawning.

Boilies are doing their share of the damage with the popular Ngage from CC Moores proving popular.

When the sun shines the fish are up on the surface and anglers prepared to put some time into floater fishing have been reaping the rewards.

York’s young James Bedford enjoyed the session of a lifetime last week which was topped by a stunning personal best mirror carp of 25lb 5oz. The beast fell to floating dog biscuits fished with a controller float from peg B. To book action phone Sam on 07588 679595.

Shepherd AC enjoyed a brilliant opening weekend contest on the Tidal section of the Ouse at Acaster.

Beginning the contest on the top of the tide was a shrewd move as bream, skimmers and hybrids fed avidly for the first few hours.

Matthew Crowl led the way with a superb bag of 28lb 2oz that included a brace of slabs. Pete Mills had a couple of barbel-shaped surprises in his 13lb 12oz second placed net.

Others: N Crowl 10-4-0; A Moult 9-10-0; I Hardcastle 7-3-0; D Findlay 6-11-0; C Bannister 5-9-0; J Lamb 3-1-0; P Webster 2-14-0.

Pellet proved the top bait at Langwith where Roger Holmes used it to best effect at peg 2 on Bethany’s Lake. Fishing tight to the island, he found carp to 3lb to end the day with 64lb 9oz.

The same tactics at peg 1 on Kevin’s Lake saw Tim Bell finish just a fish off with 63b 7oz.

Others: Harry Bignall 53-4-0; George Barby 51-4-0; Chris Riley 46-10-0; Andy Marritt 38-6-0.

The top action at Oaktree Leisure was at the car park end of pond four and at peg 52 in particular where Dave Parker offered meat and corn at ten metres to take mainly carp to 4lb as he progressed to a winning 44lb. The same stamp carp fell to runner-up Steve Hodson who opted for pellet at 14m off a peg 55 draw finishing the day with 37lb 8oz in the net.
