PLANS are afoot to revive the York Municipal Tennis Tournament.

The competition was first played in the 1920s and became the major tennis event in the city, but it was last held in 2007 before being cancelled due to dwindling numbers of entries.

Bob Shread, head of tennis at St Peter’s School, is keen to reinstate the tournament and suggests it could be held at St Peter’s during the week starting Monday, August 8.

Shread, pictured, is appealing for anyone interested in playing or in helping to organise the event to contact him.

He said: “Many of the former winners are still actively involved in the men’s, ladies and mixed leagues in York.

“It is the only city-wide tournament for adults in York and would feature men’s and ladies singles as well as doubles. There would also be the possibility of veterans in these categories if there is a demand.

“There was no entry requirement and it allowed any tennis players to challenge the very best in York.

“In its heyday it used to attract a good field of competitors and was viewed by a large number of spectators when it was held in Rowntree Park.

“I would just like to gauge the level of interest among current players for its return and see if any of the many other tennis coaches in York would be prepared to assist me.

“St Peter’s School would be delighted to host the event.”
