HERE in New Earswick we have a very pleasant country footpath known as Jon’s Walk.

It includes part of the River Foss bank and the old York-Hull disused railway track passing through woodland and terminating in an ancient meadow, full of interesting flora and fauna – a pleasant place to be.

The Trust has provided two bench seats made of a very hard resin-bonded material which resists all forms of carving.

Unfortunately this place has also attracted nocturnal visits from the rather unsavoury members of society, who leave behind their rubbish, empty cans and bottles etc.

Frustrated no doubt by being unable to carve the seats, they have made fires underneath them, completely destroying one and severely damaging the other.

Do they realise that this senseless act of vandalism has not only spoiled the enjoyment of us elderly, as it give us a haven of peace and tranquillity, but they have also robbed themselves of a rendezvous.
