LAURA Cantrell, the New York country singer with Nashville roots, has proved herself the queen of covers already on Trains And Boats And Planes, a mini-LP most notable for a heart-rending take on New Order’s Love Vigilantes.
Now she devotes an entire album to the songs of country trailblazer Kitty Wells, a delightful homage topped by her own composition, the swinging title track.
Nashville country gal Diana Jones should be better known. Instead, her songs keep ending up in the hands of more famous names and maybe that won’t change with her third album, but once more her songwriting in the mountain-ballad tradition is haunting and perceptive and topical too.
Expect High Atmosphere, Poverty, Don’t Forget Me and especially My Love Is Gone to be snapped up by bigger fish, but in the meantime keep up with Diana Jones, every inch as good as Iris Dement and Gillian Welch.
