THOUSANDS of cycling enthusiasts are expected at Knavesmire this weekend for one of the highlights of the bicycling calendar.

The annual York Cycle Show will see a huge range of events over today and tomorrow aimed at everyone from biking experts to novices. Attractions include mountain bike stunt shows, rides out, a bike auction, and food and drink stalls.

Sunday will see a grand cycle parade setting off from York Minster at 9.45am, following a special service for cyclists at 9am.

The show is intended to coincide with the end of National Bike Week and is expected to bring 10,000 visitors to York.

Paul Hepworth, chairman of the show’s committee, said: “The show is one of the biggest national events for cyclists.

“Since it started in 1945, it has encouraged thousands to pedal for pleasure. If you are a cyclist or you want start cycling, it is a great place to get information, advice and a bike, plus accessories and clothing at bargain prices.”

Saturday also coincides with the arrival of a prototype London 2012 Olympic torch, which will be at Knavesmire from 10am to 4pm.

Mr Hepworth added: “We hope that by taking part in our Bike Week event, families will beat the credit crunch plus the health crunch, rediscover how much fun cycling is and will be encouraged to keep cycling the whole year round.”
