Supermarket chains have begun cutting fuel prices.
Tesco slashed 3p a litre from the cost of its petrol and diesel yesterday to launch a price battle on the forecourts.
Sainsbury’s and Asda said they would be bringing in the same level of reductions from today.
The firms have responded to a big fall in the cost of oil sparked by a decision by the International Energy Agency (IEA) decision to release emergency reserves.
Asda said its reductions would mean customers would pay no more than 130.7p for a litre of petrol or 134.7p for a litre of diesel.
The IEA will release a stockpile of 60 million barrels over the next 30 days.
Fuel price relief
MOTORISTS will be heaving a muted sign of relief. Supermarkets are cutting the cost of petrol, in response to a fall in international oil prices.
The price drop follows a decision by the International Energy Agency to release emergency fuel reserves. It has allowed supermarkets to reduce prices by about 3p a litre. It is absolutely right they should pass this on to hard-pressed motorists. We hope other petrol retailers follow suit.
