DESPITE a valiant fight-back York’s injured Simon Dyson was sweating on whether he had dented his chances of making next month’s 140th Open Championship, writes Tony Kelly.

The 33-year-old, who missed the cut in the BMW International Open in Germany, had been hoping for a solid show to reinforce his Race to Dubai position that should get him into The Open at Royal St George’s in Kent.

But hampered by a back injury, which increasingly restricted his movement, he finished on the wrong side of the cut after he followed his two-over first round 74 with a two-under 70 at the Golfclub Munchen course in Munich.

Yesterday’s second round did not start well with Dyson dropping shots on the 11th hole – he started on the tenth – and then on 14 and 15.

But then began the world number 72’s stirring fightback.

The Malton & Norton GC star carded three consecutive birdies to finish the outward nine with success on holes 16, 17 and 18.

He went below-par when he picked up two more shots on the third and sixth holes.

But his third bogey of the day on the eighth left him poised right on the projected cut tally.

Dyson is now expected to see one of the country’s leading specialists in the treatment of back injuries in Birmingham before deciding whether to play in the French Open at St Omer next Thursday.

A second successive 71 from John Parry of Harrogate GC ensured he made the cut for today’s third round.
