A man died when an airport express train struck him on the East Coast main line north of York this afternoon.
Police and paramedics were called to the track near Station Hotel, Tollerton, between Thirsk and York at 4.20pm.
The man was declared dead at the scene. No details of his identification have been released. British Transport Police (BTP) and North Yorkshire Police both attended.
A BTP spokesman said the man had been hit by the 15.15 service from Newcastle to Manchester Airport and the matter was not being treated as suspicious. Police are preparing a file for the coroner.
The incident closed all four lines of the East Coast line. Rail companies are reporting delays of up 60 minutes between York and Darlington.
The delays are likely to last until 8.30pm and are affecting First Transpennine Express, CrossCountry, East Coast and Grand Central trains.
