Stillington Squash Club are celebrating a successful season after three of their teams were promoted, with two winning their respective divisions.
The men’s first team were crowned York and District division two champions and the men’s second team were promoted as runners-up in division three, while the men’s third team won the divison four title and also lifted the Riley Cup.
“It has been a brilliant season across the board, it has exceeded all expectations,” said first team captain Jon Wright.
“It is the best year for the club in terms of team performance.”
Wright was quick to pay tribute to the influence of coach and first team player Matt Bridson.
“Matt’s influence as a player, and coaching skills have been very important,” he said.
“Thanks to his coaching of the juniors on a Monday night, we always had a ready made pool of talent available.”
Wright is already looking ahead to next season, and is aiming to increase the standard of players even more.
“The club committee has sponsored three of us to do our National Squash Level One coaching qualifications,” he said.
“We are also going to be doing some team training sessions during the summer with Matt to increase our team play in preparation for life in division one.”
Bridson added: “Division one is a much higher standard of squash.
“The team training sessions in the summer are going to be vital in improving our fitness and preparing to take on the best players in the county.”
Any juniors interested in playing squash, should phone Bridson on 07949 289536 or email him at mattsquash@live.co.uk for details of how to get involved.
